The piece itself became a way to explore deeper personal and societal issues. Drawing inspiration from the color red, I symbolized themes of accountability, justice, and complicity, particularly in relation to my own experiences as a queer woman living with a dynamic disability. The visceral imagery of “blood on one’s hands” served as a direct, powerful statement on the systems and individuals that evade responsibility.
In the process, I embraced a messy, instinctual approach, layering, scraping, and manipulating the paint with both palette knives and my hands. The experience was challenging but deeply cathartic, allowing me to rediscover the freedom of creating from pure emotion rather than perfection. This piece is not just about technique, but about feeling, something I hope resonates with viewers as they engage with the work.
